| I am extremely excited about the new options available to help my patients. Just as technology seems to change our lives daily, the same trends are taking place in my practice. Many of the new procedures available to me are unlike the dental practice of even a few years ago. If you haven't been to a dentist in a while, you will be amazed at some of these advancements. As you know, my goal is to help my patients keep their natural teeth for a lifetime. One way I do this is through regularly scheduled dental examinations and cleanings. If I encounter any trouble spots in your teeth on one of these exams, I will give you a careful treatment plan to bring you back to good oral health, with estimated costs. Dental Sealants. Importantly, you can also protect your back teeth through what we call Dental Sealants. Back teeth have tiny pits and fissures in them that are so small they can not be cleaned by a toothbrush. A Dental Sealant is a special, thin plastic material that is applied to a chewing surface of a back tooth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting your enamel from plaque and acid. This is especially important for children when they first get their permanent teeth. Managing Your Oral Health. At Neal Martin Dentistry we offer an excellent way to whiten your teeth. First I make a ‘tray’ of your teeth, top and bottom. This is nothing more complicated than taking an impression in a pliable material. With it, I will next design a comfortable molded cover. This is somewhat like a plastic mouth guard that athletes wear for protection, except it's nearly invisible. I will design this cover in a way that’s exactly correct for your teeth. You then place this cover along with a special whitening agent on your teeth for only thirty minutes a day. The process towards achieving the whitening level you desire typically takes about 20 days in total.
I can help make your smile more beautiful with Veneers. These are extremely thin porcelain materials that are about the thinness of a contact lens. I apply these to the fronts of your teeth. We can correct a wide variety of unsightly dental distortions or conditions, such as:
I use Lumineers. They are extremely thin but durable and can last up to twenty years or longer to become the new cosmetic surfaces for your teeth. I apply them in a process where there are usually no shots or drilling. I often do not remove tooth structure, so these veneers are safe for patients with sensitive teeth. Generally this work can be done in two visits.
Fillings. It seems that almost everyone from childhood to an advanced age sometimes needs a filling. I utilize the very latest techniques of General Dentistry to repair your teeth and use permanent materials to extend the life of each tooth that may require a filling. We now are able to offer tooth-colored fillings on back teeth as well as those in the front. Crowns. A crown is another type of Dental Restoration. Generally it is called for to “cap” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape, size and function. It also strengthens and improves the appearance of a damaged tooth. Often I can recommend ways to deal with all these problems. Dental Implants. One thing I sometimes suggest is Dental Implants. In my practice I do mini dental implants which require less healing time. These are tiny, elongated titanium screws that act like the original roots of your teeth. In a carefully controlled, minimally-invasive technique these very small devices (1.8 millimeter in diameter) are placed in the jawbone. The heads of these implant ‘anchors’ provide a strong, solid foundation for securing your dentures. However, your dentures are easily removeable for daily cleanings. If for some reason, these Dental Implants are not appropriate for you, I can suggest other ways of dealing with your problems, especially if your present dentures are ill-fitting.
If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be particularly self-conscious about your appearance. When teeth are missing, it can be difficult to chew, or other teeth may tilt into the empty space or up and down. This can affect your bite and place unusual stress on your teeth. This sometimes leads to chewing on one side only which can also place unusual stress on your jaw joints. A missing tooth also can result in ‘shrinking’ of your jawbone. A bridge is a dental restoration that replaces or spans the space where one or more teeth have been lost. The replacement teeth are permanently attached to the neighboring teeth. I have a variety of methods and materials I can use to do this. Bridges are made from metal, ceramics, or a combination of both. I’ll consider the appearance and function of your bridge and discuss the material that I think is correct for your needs.
If one of your teeth becomes injured, diseased, or painful, it can often be saved through a specialized dental procedure known as a Root Canal. This procedure involves the removal of the tooth’s pulp, a small thread-like tissue that was important to the development of your tooth. If the pulp is diseased or injured and unable to repair itself, it loses its vitality. If the injured or diseased pulp is not removed, the tissues surrounding the root of the tooth can become infected. An abscess can form, resulting in pain and swelling. Without treatment the tooth may be lost. When I see an abscessed tooth caused by decay, the first step is to remove the decay. I will over-simplify the procedures involved next, but basically after the decay is removed, I make an opening into the pulp chamber inside the tooth. Next, I remove the pulp and clean and shape the root canals. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) are then filled with a special material. Then I may need to insert a metal post in the root canal to support the restoration that follows—your new crown. The crown of your tooth is then restored. As long as the root(s) of a treated tooth are nourished by the tissues that surround it, your repaired tooth can remain healthy. However, good oral hygiene is critically important to ensure the tooth does not again become diseased.
The word ‘periodontal’ means ‘around the tooth’. Healthy gum tissue fits like a cuff around each tooth. Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the tissues and bone that support your teeth. When untreated, periodontal disease may eventually lead to a loose tooth or eventually, the complete loss of that tooth. Several warning signs can signal a periodontal problem. This chair-side laser is used in procedures requiring great accuracy and patient comfort. The 2.4G contains two lasers in one. The first is a highly accurate "laser pointer" for aligning the working infrared laser to precisely where he needs it to be. The second is the actual, high-tech “infrared laser” used for many procedures such as gingival surgeries, and cauterizations.
